10 fun things to do in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is the capital of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria. Vice Admiral Pieter van der Does seized the city for the Netherlands in 1599. This lasted only about a week. Is Las Palmas a pleasant place to visit? Yes! The old town is full of lovely sites. There are also pleasant squares with cafés and restaurants, as well as long beaches.

  1. Casa de Colón

Casa de Colón is a lovely edifice next to the church. This museum, housed in a sixteenth-century building, is to Christopher Columbus’ expeditions and the history of Las Palmas. A fantastic site to explore, the building itself is stunning.

  1. Museo Canario

Do you want to learn more about the Canary Islands’ pre-colonial history? Then the Museo Canario is a must-see. Many prehistoric finds from Gran Canaria’s original occupants can be here. It is one of Spain’s best archaeological museums.

  1. Vegueta

The Veguata neighbourhood is both the oldest and most picturesque in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Veguata is the mediaeval city centre that houses the before mentioned sights such as the Cathedral and Casa de Colón. Also, there are many attractive narrow lanes, churches, and old buildings in the neighbourhood. A beautiful area to spend an afternoon strolling about and one of the greatest things to do in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

  1. Plaza de Cairasco

Plaza de Cairasco is another must-see when exploring the historic district of Las Palmas. It’s a stunning square with palm trees and spectacular structures on both sides. A pleasant place to unwind with a glass of wine on one of the terraces.

  1. Go shopping 

Do you enjoy shopping? Then Las Palmas is the destination for everyone. There are many shopping streets in the city centre and in the north (near the beaches), but Calle Triana is the loveliest and most attractive. There are many well-known chain stores as well as charming boutiques here. On the side streets, here are also some excellent tapas restaurants and drinking establishments.

  1. Jardin Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo

Do you want to unwind throughout your city visit? Then you should go to Jardn Botánico Canario Viera y Clavijo. This enormous botanical park is about seven kilometres southwest of Las Palmas and is where you can learn more about the Canary Islands’ flora and fauna. A wonderful spot to explore and unwind.

  1. Auditorium Alfredo Kraus

The Auditorio Alfredo Kraus is at the far western end of Playa de Las Canteras. This is one of the coolest buildings in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and a fantastic venue for cultural acts. The structure is meant to depict a lighthouse that guards the city. Around the structure, there are various stunning works of art.

  1. Plaza de la Puntilla

Plaza de La Puntilla is at the far northern end of Playa de Las Canteras. It’s more quieter here than on the beaches, but it’s also a lovely area to relax on the cliff’s edge. The beach on this side is rocky, and you can hear the waves crashing. A tranquil spot to escape the crowds on Playa de Las Canteras. A wonderful place to grab a fast bite.

  1. Parque de Santa Catalina

The core of the city is the Parque de Santa Catalina and the nearby Plaza Comandante Ramón Franco, as well as the city’s connection to the bus terminal and port. It is always busy here, but never overcrowded due to the size. There are many restaurants and terraces here, as well as the intriguing Elder Museum of Science and Technology.

  1. Castillo de la Luzu

Castillo de la Luz is a fifteenth-century stone castle located immediately next to the port. It is a lovely park, and you can also explore the stronghold. There is an art display at the fort.
